So last night Hubby and I went to see Cake in concert (his boss dude got everyone tickets). Okay the celebrity theater was built in 1963 folks - just in case people are interested in a bit of Arizona history. Tileman's boss kept saying it was built in the 70s until his wife told him to look at the sign. They still had the 40th celebration sign up from a few years ago.
As for the band - I kept telling hubby I had no clue who Cake was. I only recognized the last song they sang so now I know why I couldn't place the band. Not to mention I turn to a different station when "he's going the distance" comes on. Almost after every song the singer kept plugging http://www.cakemusic.com/ . Apparently they left their big record label to do things their way, and if you want to hear another album you should go over to show support.
All I kept thinking was how similar bands and writers are - we keep pushing to be noticed by the "big" people, and when we finally land that contract, we can't wait to get out of it. Tileman said it is because the "big" people have all the money and know the promotion game, but once they give you a name no one wants to follow the rules set down by the big company. Well that's a huge generalization but that was Tileman's reasoning.
