"why did Shawn go for the complicated tiles anyway"
Hubby is putting down Saltillo tile in the hallway and Living room, because he wanted a southwest appeal and because of their affordability.
He took 30 4x4 tiles and had them fired and then glazed them 3 different colors. When he picked them up after the second firing, the clerck told him if he picked up the tiles completed at the ceramic store they would have run $6-7 a piece. Hubby did them for 1.25 after factoring in cost for tiles, glaze, and firing.
The other thing about Saltillo tiles is the uneven edging. Therefore Hubby did not use tile spacers and why he had a tile expert come in to show him how to lay the tile. I thought it would look wierd to have uneven spaces between the tiles, but you really can't tell. And that is part of the appeal to make the flooring look old-fashion as well. The tile guy said you'll notice the uneven spacing even less once the grout is in.
So, Kat does that answer your question?
